Questions

Can I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox: drop the HEIC and choose JPG. Browsers other than Safari cannot read HEIC themselves, so the page loads a HEIC decoder the first time you add one; the photo is still converted on your device.

What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the colour you choose, white by default.

Which quality should I use?

Ninety for anything with text or sharp lines, 80 to 85 for photos. PNG has no quality setting.

Why does AVIF take longer than the other formats?

Browsers cannot write AVIF themselves, so the page loads an AVIF encoder (about 3.5 MB, cached after the first time) and runs it on your device. A large photo takes a few seconds; the result is usually 20 to 30 percent smaller than WebP.

Is the conversion done on a server?

No. The browser decodes and re-encodes the image on your device; nothing is uploaded.
