Why convert JPG to PNG

Some upload forms, print shops and older systems accept PNG only, and PNG is the right container once you plan to edit an image further, because every save after this one is lossless.

What changes in the file

Converting does not recover detail the JPG already threw away; it only stops further loss. The PNG will usually be larger than the JPG, often several times larger for photographs. There is no quality setting for PNG.

Questions

Why is the PNG bigger than my JPG?

PNG stores pixels without lossy compression, so a photograph that was 300 KB as JPG can become 2 MB as PNG. That is expected.

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The pixels are copied as they are. It prevents any further loss on later saves, which is useful if you will edit the file.

Can I get a transparent background this way?

Not from a JPG, which has no transparency to begin with. Background removal is a different tool and is not part of this site yet.
