Why convert PNG to AVIF

Large PNG screenshots, illustrations and product cut-outs are often the heaviest files on a page. AVIF keeps transparency like PNG and compresses far harder, so a 1 MB PNG frequently becomes 100 to 200 KB as AVIF without a visible change on screen.

What changes in the file

AVIF here is lossy: at quality 90 and above flat colours and text stay crisp, while lower settings can soften fine lines and add faint blotches in gradients. The alpha channel is kept, so transparent backgrounds stay transparent. The encoder loads from this site on first use and runs on your device.

Questions

Does AVIF keep my transparent background?

Yes. AVIF stores an alpha channel, so logos and cut-outs keep their transparent edges.

Is AVIF better than WebP for graphics?

Usually smaller at the same quality, especially for large illustrations. For tiny icons the difference is a few hundred bytes and WebP or SVG may be simpler.

Why is my text slightly blurred?

Lossy AVIF smooths sharp edges at lower quality. Raise the slider to 90 or more for screenshots with small text, or keep the PNG when every pixel must match.

Will WordPress accept AVIF uploads?

WordPress 6.5 and later accept AVIF if the server's image library supports it. Many CDNs and Shopify also serve AVIF; older plugins may not create thumbnails from it.
