Why convert JPG to WEBP

For photos on a website, WebP delivers the same visible quality as JPG at roughly 25 to 35 percent smaller files, which shows up directly in page speed scores. This is the conversion to run on product photos, blog images and hero pictures before upload.

What changes in the file

Re-encoding a JPG adds a second lossy step, so keep the WebP quality at 80 or above to avoid stacking artefacts. The camera's EXIF metadata is dropped; the orientation is applied to the pixels first so the photo stays upright.

Questions

How much smaller will my photo be?

Typically a quarter to a third smaller at matched quality. Highly compressed JPGs gain less because there is less left to save.

Will the image lose quality twice?

Slightly, since JPG was already lossy. At quality 80 and above the second step is not visible on a screen.

Does WebP work in WordPress and Shopify?

Yes, both accept WebP uploads today. Check any older plugin or theme that generates thumbnails.
