How it works

  1. The output is set to AVIF.
  2. Set the quality; 90 for text and graphics, around 80 for photos. The AVIF encoder loads on first use.
  3. Drop your JPG files; other formats work too.
  4. Download one, or all as a ZIP.

Why convert JPG to AVIF

AVIF is the most efficient photo format browsers can show today: at the same visible quality it is usually 20 to 30 percent smaller than WebP and about half the size of JPG. Converting hero images, product shots and blog photos to AVIF is one of the quickest ways to cut page weight and improve Largest Contentful Paint.

What changes in the file

No browser can write AVIF from a canvas, so the page fetches a 3.5 MB AVIF encoder (libavif compiled to WebAssembly) from this site the first time you choose AVIF; the photo itself never leaves your device. Encoding is slower than JPG, a few seconds for a large photo. The JPG's earlier compression is not undone, so start from the best copy you have, and camera EXIF data is not carried over.

Questions

Which browsers can open AVIF files?

Chrome since 2020, Edge since early 2024, Firefox since version 93 and Safari since iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. For older browsers, serve a JPG fallback with a picture element.

Why does the first AVIF take longer?

The encoder is downloaded once (about 3.5 MB) and cached by your browser. After that, each photo takes a second or a few, depending on its size.

What quality should I choose?

Around 80 on this slider gives results that are hard to tell from the JPG for most photos. Lower values shrink the file quickly; check faces and skies, where AVIF smoothing shows first.

Can I upload AVIF to a job portal or exam form?

Usually not. Most forms accept only JPG or PNG. AVIF is for websites you build or manage, not for application uploads.
